Exposure -Mastering Dental Photography

This course is designed to provide dental professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to take high-quality surgical and dental photographs with proper exposure under any setting.

Through hands-on training and case-based learning, participants will also gain practical experience in using different types of cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment to capture clear, sharp, and well-exposed images of surgical procedures.
Participants will have a strong foundation in dental and surgical photography and be able to apply these skills in their clinical practice to achieve the creative and professional vision, whether they are capturing images for documentation, communication, or marketing purposes, this course will provide it all in both intraoral and extraoral fashion.

In addition to technical skills, the course will also focus on the creative and artistic aspects of photography, including composition, lighting, and color theory. Participants will learn how to combine technical expertise with artistic vision to create compelling and impactful images applying the correct lighting, focus and frame using landscape, portrait, and still life photography.

Dr. Hussein Basma received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Damascus University in 2009 . Dr. Basma completed a residency in Prosthodontics at Lebanese University and received a Certificate in Periodontology and Master of Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Basma is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontology at UAB. He is a Diplomate in the American Board of Periodontology, lectures nationally and internationally about periodontology and implant dentistry. Dr. Basma has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles and abstracts. His teaching efforts focus on bone augmentation, full-arch rehabilitation, multidisciplinary care, and integration of technology.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the different types of surgical lighting conditions and their impact on exposure, including direct and indirect lighting, specular highlights, and shadow detail.
  2. Adjust camera settings to achieve optimal exposure in different surgical lighting conditions, including setting the correct white balance, using exposure compensation, and adjusting the focus and depth of field.
  3. Learn about different types of cameras and lenses to capture surgical images with the right exposure, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and macro lenses.
  4. Select and use different types of lighting equipment for surgical photography, including ring flashes and LED panels
  5. Analyze and critique surgical images for exposure quality, and identify ways to improve exposure and overall image quality.
  6. Apply exposure techniques to specific surgical procedures, including implant placement, grafting, and orthognathic surgery, to capture accurate and detailed images.
  7. Learn how to set up a clinical photography station and how to control lighting to achieve optimal results.
  8. Understand the different types of dental photography, including intraoral and extraoral photography, and when to use them.
  9. Learn how to capture high-quality images of the oral cavity, including tooth morphology, occlusal relationships, and soft tissue anatomy.
  10. Understand how to use dental photography for documentation and communication purposes, including case presentations, treatment planning, and communication with patients and other dental professionals.
  11. Learn how to use dental photography for aesthetic dentistry and smile design, including taking patient portraits and using digital imaging software.
  12. Gain practical experience through hands-on training and practice sessions to build skills and confidence in dental photography.
  13. Understand the basic principles of surgical photography, including camera settings, lighting, and composition.
  14. Identify the different types of surgical procedures and their photographic requirements.
  15. Select and use appropriate cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment for surgical photography.
  16. Control exposure, focus, depth of field, and color balance to achieve optimal image quality.
  17. Use various photographic techniques, such as framing, angles, and perspectives, to capture different aspects of surgical procedures.
  18. Apply post-processing techniques to enhance and manipulate surgical images for documentation and presentation.
  19. Analyze and critique surgical images for technical quality, aesthetic value, and clinical relevance.
  20. Develop a standard protocol for surgical photography in clinical practice or research.
